PLS is supporting the next generation of renewable energy professionals through a scholarship partnership with the University of Western Australia (UWA).
Through our Community Investment Program, we are funding two scholarships for students enrolled in the Master of Renewable and Future Energy at UWA.
The initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening the skills and capability needed to support Australia’s energy transition and the long-term sustainability of the resources sector.
Mei is the first recipient of the PLS scholarship. After several years working in the oil and gas industry, she made the decision to return to university full-time to transition her career into renewable energy. As the primary income earner in her household, stepping away from work to study presented financial challenges.
“I embarked on this Master’s degree to accelerate my learning and development in hopes of pivoting my career towards the growing renewable energy sector,” Mei said.
The scholarship has enabled her to retrain and apply her technical experience to the renewable energy sector at a critical time in Australia’s decarbonisation journey.
“I have ambitions to work in WA’s energy policy-making or advisory and modelling upon completion of my studies, as I believe that the renewable energy industry is most influenced by political and regulatory climates.
“As an energy professional with technical knowledge, I take it upon myself to step up in ensuring that decisions are based on factual, sound analysis amid plenty of bias and speculation in the media.”
The Master of Renewable and Future Energy prepares graduates for roles critical to Australia’s and the world’s decarbonisation efforts. The course covers renewable energy systems, microgrid and smart grid technologies, chemical renewables and energy storage, and energy transition strategy.
The scholarship helps remove financial barriers for students undertaking intensive postgraduate study. Priority is given to students demonstrating academic excellence and/or educational disadvantage, including women in non-traditional fields, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, those experiencing financial hardship, and students from rural or regional backgrounds.
The second scholarship recipient will be announced later this year.
Through this partnership with UWA, we are creating greater opportunity in renewable energy careers and strengthening the education and skills that underpin Australia’s energy transition. It’s one of the ways we are investing in the future of our industry and the communities in which we operate.
