PLS has partnered with the Centre of Resource Excellence (CoRE) Learning Foundation to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education for young people in Port Hedland.
This collaboration will support the delivery of the ‘Powering Tomorrow’s Innovators: Port Hedland STEM Learning Program,’ a hands-on learning initiative designed to inspire the next generation of innovators and prepare students for future STEM careers.
Thanks to funding from PLS, 300 students from Baler Primary School will take part in the inclusive program. Through interactive, real-world projects, they’ll explore the role of lithium and the resources sector in shaping a sustainable energy future – developing the skills and curiosity needed to become tomorrow’s innovators.
Funding will also support the professional development of up to 10 teachers from Baler Primary School, helping strengthen their capabilities in STEM education.
At the end of each semester, students will present their innovative solutions to industry professionals, showcasing their creativity, problem-solving skills and understanding of STEM concepts.
PLS Chief People and Sustainability Officer Sandra McInnes said this landmark three-year partnership represents a meaningful step forward for STEM education in the Pilbara.
“While CoRE’s programs have been inspiring students in the Pilbara for years, this is the first time an organisation has formally partnered to help expand their reach,” Ms McInnes said.
“PLS is proud to be working alongside the CoRE Learning Foundation to bring STEM education to life in Port Hedland.
“This is more than just learning, it’s about sparking curiosity, building confidence and opening doors to the jobs of the future.”
CoRE Learning Foundation Co-Founder and Lead Educator Suzy Urbaniak OAM said the program is designed to ignite curiosity and help students connect with the STEM woven into their everyday lives.
“Our program empowers young people in Port Hedland to explore the industries that shape their community and the unique environment they call home. Through immersive, hands-on learning, we bring STEM to life in a way that’s relevant and exciting.
“We foster an inspiring learning environment that’s both meaningful and purposeful – helping students understand how their education connects to future opportunities in the resources sector and broader industries.”
The program aims to expand into more schools across Port Hedland in the future.
This initiative is one of the ways PLS is Shaping Tomorrow – working together with local communities to build a brighter future.
